c.ART cata.LOG
There are many great bookmarking and categorizing tools available for use, and many of them are highly effective...unless you use ALL of them and then forget which site you used to bookmark something. I AM INFAMOUS FOR DOING THIS. To combat my poor bookmarking ability, I decided to create this blog to serve as my virtual junk-drawer; a place for art, education, and "other" found treasures.

Summer School Day 1
Today was my first day at the hospital working with elementary, middle, and high school kids. I have to say I think the day couldn't have gone better. The kids were amazing. They followed instructions, were very productive, and began work on some very impressive designs. We started the day with a light catcher project using a Scratch-Light kit. The activity took about 30-45 min start to finish. When the students finished, they began their drawings for a name design project using large 20 x 30 sheets of drawing paper. Most students finished the drawing stage and began coloring in the shapes and spaces using oil pastels, crayons or markers. This project will take anywhere from 2-3 days.
I need lesson ideas in a bad way. I'm not used to teaching art that focuses only on the studio aspect. I felt off at various points during the day because I was leaving out art history and formal aspects of art. All in all though, I think I will enjoy summer school and gain some valuable experience for when I begin teaching in the fall.

Lucille P. Scelfo's Process for Marbling Silk
I recently taught a lesson on Suminagashi and paper marbling (except the students used tempera paint and shaving cream). Nevertheless, I liked the lesson so much that it has now snowballed into a rather large purchase of silk scarves, ties, and upgraded marbling supplies. I came across this artist's page while searching for more information on Suminagashi techniques. I like how she includes a "Process" page, and I think her pieces are very reasonably priced. Definitely worth viewing (both for professional and personal reasons).

TEACH Engineering
TEACH Engineering
(from the Homepage) "The TeachEngineering digital library provides teacher-tested, standards-based engineering content for K-12 teachers to use in science and math classrooms. Engineering lessons connect real-world experiences with curricular content already taught in K-12 classrooms. Mapped to educational content standards, TeachEngineering's comprehensive curricula are hands-on, inexpensive, and relevant to children's daily lives. Remember — you don't need to be an engineer to use these curricular resources!"

Illuminations
I believe that all subjects can be taught through art, and art can be taught through all subjects. After all, everything is related to each other somehow...the key is finding out how. I often find myself searching within other subject areas to find inspiration for my one-day-art class and curriculum. I love LOVE LOVE finding relationships between things, so this seems to be a natural progression for me. Nevertheless, my point is that I often come across math and science sites and resources that are just begging to be incorporated into a visual arts lesson plan.
Illuminations, from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, is a great teaching resource which includes activities, lessons, and standards for K-12 mathematics. Given the relationship between art and math, this is a valuable tool for art teachers as well. This relationship can be seen in:
Below is a worksheet maker that I thought was very neat. It is called Dynamic Paper, and it easily creates a variety of PDF worksheets which are available for you to download or embed into a webpage.

Art History Club
This is an online art history encyclopedia and art reference site. It is very easy to navigate, and it covers a wide range of artists and movements.
Art History Club (2005)
2004 was a GREAT year for you, North Carolina!
Though 6 years old and counting, these curriculum guides from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in North Carolina are AMAZING! Each one is incredibly detailed, and for the inexperienced art teacher, they are definitely worth bookmarking (just remember where you save the link!).
This is what the layout of the Scope and Sequence chart looks like. I think this is very easy to determine which skills are required per grade level.
There is a section per each grade level titled "What every -grader Should Know and Be Able to Do." This is a handy check-list for age/grade appropriate skills. Likewise, each grade has recommended vocabulary words....not just 5 or 6, but a page full. Vocab, vocab, vocab...literacy, literacy, literacy. YAY!
There are examples of assessments, rubrics, links, health and safety tips, glossary, and more.
HERE is a link to the district's website/Visual Arts page.
There are curriculum guides for elementary, middle school, high school, and honors courses. Below are a few images from the elementary guide. I'm a visual person, so it helps to have an image more so than a wordy description to refresh my memory. I have selected random parts that I find particularly useful. This is what the layout of the Scope and Sequence chart looks like. I love Kansas City now!!
I have found many great new-teacher resources from almost every state, and I really wish I could remember when and where I bookmarked each one. Today, however, I found a brand new resource for new Art Teachers...thanks to the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Visual Arts Department. This handbook will be useful to new art teachers everywhere, not just within their district. I found the section on teaching from art carts to be especially useful. Thanks again Kansas City!!!

Mrs. Brown's Art Class
Mrs. Brown's Art Class is another great place to visit for lesson ideas and teaching tips.
Mixbook
PLEASE NOTE: This post contains images of an art-portfolio Mixbook. Some pages contain images of nude figure drawings from a university art class.
I included Mixbook in a previous post, but here is an example of a Mixbook that I created. I ordered a hard copy of this version, and I have to admit...I LOVE IT!!!
This can be a great way for students to showcase their work, and the applications for educational use are pretty much unlimited. You can collaborate with others on the same book, order hard copies, or view & embed digital versions. Special discounts are available for educators. Tip: Coupon codes are almost always available at RetailMeNot (another website I can not live without)
